Art Department Standards
1. The student will be
able to understand and apply media, techniques, and processes related to the
visual arts.
2. The student will be
able to identify and apply how to use structures (e.g. sensory qualities,
organizational principals, expressive features) and functions of art.
3. The student will be
able to demonstrate knowledge of subject matter, symbols, and potential ideas
in the visual arts.
4. The student will be
able to identify and understand the visual arts in relation to history and
cultures. The student will also be able to develop the study of art heritage.
5. The student will be
able to evaluate and estimate the characteristics and merits of one’s own
artwork and that of others. The student will also develop aesthetic judgment
and establish simple criteria.

Benchmarks
Level I First - Third Grade
1. Identifies that seeing involves perception
under varying conditions of light, color, position, and texture.
2.
Demonstrates
beginning skill in creating three-D structures and arrangements using concrete
materials or manipulation.
3.
Creates
artworks and expresses ideas and feelings by his/her use of basic art materials
(e.g. paints, crayons, clay).
4.
Identifies
the names of basic colors as well as primary and secondary colors.
Level II Fourth - Sixth Grade
1.
Identifies
the differences between art materials, techniques, and processes.
2.
Distinguishes
and recognizes how different materials, techniques, and processes cause
different viewer responses.
3.
Knows
how different media, techniques, and processes are used to communicate thoughts
about self, family, and the wider community.
4.
Knows
how to utilize art materials in a safe and responsible manner.
Level III Seventh - Eighth Grade
1. Identifies and
understands what makes different art media, techniques and processes effective,
or not, in communicating ideas.
2. Knows and demonstrates
how the qualities of art media, techniques, and processes can be used to
enhance the communication of experiences and ideas.
Level IV Ninth - Twelfth Grade
1. Applies
media, techniques, and processes with sufficient skill, confidence, and sensibility.
2. Demonstrates
an understanding of how the communication of ideas is related to media,
techniques, and processes.

visual structures and functions of art to communicate ideas.
Level III Seventh - Eighth Grade
1. Knows and
applies some of the effects of various structures (e.g. elements of design:
line, color, shape; principles of design: repetition, rhythm, balance) and
functions of art.
2. Understands
what makes various organizational structures effective, or ineffective, in the
communication of ideas.
3. Distinguishes
how the qualities of structures and functions of art are used to improve the communication
of one’s ideas.
Level IV Ninth - Twelfth Grade
1. Knows and
understands how the characteristics and structures of art are used to
accomplish commercial, personal, communal, or other artistic intentions.
2. Distinguishes
and understands the effectiveness of various artworks in terms of
organizational structures and functions.
3. Knows how
organizational principals and functions can be use to solve specific visual art
problems.

how visual, spatial, and temporal concepts integrate with context to
communicate intended meaning in one’s artwork.
2. Applies
different subject themes and symbols through: context, value, and aesthetics to
convey intended meanings in artwork.
Level IV Ninth
- Twelfth Grade
1. Understands
how visual, spatial, temporal, and functional values of artworks are tempered
by culture and history.
2. Identifies
and applies various subjects, symbols, and ideas in his/her artwork.

and understands how factors (e.g. climate, ideas, resources, technology)
influence visual, spatial, or temporal characteristics that give meaning or
function to a work of art.
Level IV Ninth - Twelfth Grade
1. Recognizes
a variety of historical and cultural contexts regarding characteristics and
purpose in works of art.
2. Knows the
function and meaning of specific art objects within varied cultures, times and
places.
3. Identifies
and understands relationships among works of art in terms of history,
aesthetics, and culture.
